The Walker County judge declares burn bans in dry summers, TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern piles, and the Texas A&M Forest Service posts the wildfire risk rating and prescribed-burn notices that the Sam Houston runs on. The skid steer takes stems to about 8 inches and runs 3 to 5 acres a day in understory. Areas with dense yaupon over head height go to the 300-hp machine with the 8 ft head.
Yaupon and sweetgum resprout from the root, so a mulched understory wants a bush hog or a light second pass in two years. Pine does not resprout, so I grind around the crop trees. On our jobs in the Huntsville area the yaupon goes in at 70 to 90 percent cover and comes out under 5, with 2 to 4 inches of mulch holding the sand. When I wrote EQIP plans, understory this thick went in as brush management under practice 314, and the NRCS wildlife staff liked the mulch left for quail cover. Property clearing under timber means remove brush, grind the stubs, keep the pines, and make your property open landscape instead of overgrown land.
