Land Clearing Services in San Marcos, TX
Pruitt Range & Brush provides land clearing services in San Marcos, TX and the surrounding area from Johnson City, with every project written as canopy percent, acres and days. Residential land clearing here is a cedar lot on the escarpment opened to the oaks, or a blackland lot east of the highway cleared of mesquite for a slab. Commercial land clearing services cover commercial sites along I-35 and the commercial development pads near the outlet corridor; commercial clearing of a rock pad is a day for the 300-hp machine. I run one land clearing company across three yards, so the same scope sheet travels to every tract.
- Selective clearing and brush removal: cedar mulched in place, oak limbs left alone, mesquite grubbed.
- Tree removal and stump grinding; we grind the stumps flush at $4 an inch.
- Site clearing and site preparation to a rough grade, drainage cut to the natural draw.
- Property clearing of fence lines and professional clearing along the Blanco River under the Hays County floodplain permit.
Site work stops at the rough grade. No concrete, wells, septic or house demolition from me; I know the excavation and grading crews who take it from there. A professional land clearing service tells you its limits before its price. Give Teo the acreage for a day count.
Lot Clearing for New Homes in San Marcos and Kyle
San Marcos issued 718 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, inside 4,153 for Hays County. The land clearing projects that come to me are the acreage lots west of I-35 on the escarpment, where a buyer closes on 60 percent cedar canopy and wants a pad, a drive and the oaks. One day with the skid steer, $2,800, handles a half-acre lot. A 3-acre hillside in Dripping Springs at similar canopy took two days, $5,600, cedar out and oaks and view kept, and that is the number I quote for a comparable lot here. Rock adds a day on anything bigger, and I say so before the price. Depending on site conditions we mulch in place and leave a 3-inch bed on the slope, or grub the pad and haul; the site visit decides. Residential and commercial properties start the same way: Texas 811, the plat for any pipeline or utility easement, and the recharge zone map. The acres-per-day log goes to property owners with the invoice. After a cleanup pass the crew will leave the site with the full site rough graded and site prep done, and we make your property ready for forms.
Brush Clearing and Forestry Mulching Near San Marcos
The land clearing method that uses specialized equipment to grind trees and brush into a bed of chips is what I run most days: a mulching head turns standing vegetation into mulch in one pass. On the escarpment it is the way to clear land without dragging anything downhill into the river. Hays County burn bans come from the county judge or commissioners court, and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern piles the rest of the year; mulch has no pile. Cedar, which is ashe juniper, intercepts the first inch of rain in its canopy, and AgriLife research on mature stands shows how little reaches the ground under it. Under 10 percent canopy the seeps run again; I measured that for twelve years writing EQIP plans. Much of west San Marcos sits on the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, where TCEQ requires a Water Pollution Abatement Plan before grading or clearing on mapped land, so on our jobs here the recharge map comes out before the machine. Oak wilt sets the other calendar: Texas A&M Forest Service says no live oak wounds February to June, so the crew works cedar around the oaks and leaves every oak limb alone in that window. We remove brush in areas with dense regrowth first and thin to the motts. Large acreage clearing of overgrown land runs $1,800 to $2,600 an acre at medium canopy and $3,000 to $4,000 in old growth. East of the highway mesquite will overgrow a pasture from the root crown unless it is grubbed.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in San Marcos?
Land clearing costs in San Marcos run from $2,800 for a half-acre lot to $3,000 to $4,000 an acre in old cedar; in between, the number depends on the size of the tract, the canopy percent and the soil. Rock adds a day on the escarpment. Wet blackland adds a day east of I-35 in winter. Both are written before the price. The land clearing San Marcos landowners pay for, in writing before the trailer leaves the yard:
- $2,800 a day for the skid steer mulcher. Stems to 8 inches. Transport is in the price within 60 miles of a yard.
- $4,200 a day plus transport for the 300-hp machine and its 8 ft head. Nothing on a Hill Country tract stops it.
- Cedar by the acre: light canopy under 30 percent, $900 to $1,400. Medium, $1,800 to $2,600. Dense old growth or mesquite, $3,000 to $4,000.
- Clearing to bare dirt, grubbed, hauled or piled, rough graded: $2,000 to $4,500 an acre.
- Stumps: $4 an inch of diameter with a $175 minimum per stump. Ten or more and we price the day.
- Bush hog work: $60 to $90 an acre, $400 minimum. Dozer and operator: $160 an hour.
- Hauling: $650 to $1,200 per load. Minimum trip is $1,100.
- San Marcos sits right at 60 miles from the Johnson City yard, so skid steer transport is included.
The on-site estimate costs you nothing. I walk the property with you, read the canopy on the escarpment side or the clay on the other, and the figure I write is what Teo invoices. Insured crews, written scope. Call (832) 987-3495 or send the form and Teo will call you back before the end of the business day.
